Excellent piece! Uri Avnery is a known reasonable Israeli writer (yes there are reasonable Israelis). Counterpunch.com is also a tiny minority of reasonable writers in the vast sea of ignorant and vicious writers here in the US. Writers like Avnery can read history, politicians can not or do not want to. Politicians try to make history but they fail to see through it. The trick is always to put a time limit on the history they read then conclude, erroneously of course. For example, current day politicians can only read history of the last 50 years at most and when you do, Israel exists throughout all these 50 years. Thinkers and more reasonable people on the other hand can go beyond those 50 years. What do we see when we go beyond 50 years is a totally different picture. That's why imperialist powers have always tried to occupy lands and enslave their people, and they invariably failed!
